Plot summary
Nic Eastman, Jonah Breck and Haley Peterson, students at MIT, are driving Haley to California. The trip has strained Nic and Haley's relationship: Nic walks with forearm crutches because of muscular dystrophy, and Haley, in tears, ends things with him. At a hotel, Nic and Jonah learn that a hacker known as NOMAD, who once nearly got the two of them expelled from MIT, has found them and is sending taunting messages; NOMAD takes over a laptop and switches on its camera. Tracing the signal to an address, they drive into the Nevada desert and reach an abandoned house at night. Haley screams outside. Nic blacks out, and wakes in a sterile underground facility, unable to move, questioned by a suited Dr. Wallace Damon.
