The Matrix is a science fiction action film available through Netflix, written and directed by Andy and Lana Wachowski. It stars Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Carrie-Anne Moss. It is known for its ground breaking visual effects. The film portrays a future in which humans live in a simulated world of reality, while in fact they are farmed by sentient beings that use the human population as an energy source. The protagonist, Neo, is a computer hacker who learns the truth about the world and joins the rebels, who were freed from the illusion that is the Matrix.

Thomas Anderson, AKA Neo, a computer hacker, is puzzled by a mysterious message as it flashes across his computer screen. Following the message's suggestion, he meets Trinity at a club. She introduces him to Morpheus, the man who will tell him the truth he seeks. As seen on Netflix, Morpheus offers Neo a choice. He can learn the truth about the Matrix or go back to his empty life. Neo chooses to learn the truth. Morpheus reveals that all of his life is a simulated reality. After freeing Neo's body from the Matrix, Neo lives aboard the crew's ship, the Nebuchadnezzar. Morpheus believes that Neo is the "One," a man who will fulfill the Oracle's prophecy and save the human race from enslavement by the sentient beings they created. Morpheus trains Neo in martial arts. He warns Neo if he dies in the Matrix, his body dies too.

They visit the Oracle who lives in the Matrix. She won't tell Neo if he is the "One" as Morpheus believes. She does tell him that he will have to make a difficult choice in the future. Meanwhile, a fight ensues between the crew who remain on the Nebuchadnezzar, causing chaos and leaving the rebels in the Matrix unprotected. After leaving the Oracle, the rebels plan to return to their ship but can not establish contact with the Nebuchadnezzar. Agents, the enemy's sentient beings, enter the Matrix and proceed to hunt down the remaining rebels. Agents, Trinity explains, are not possible to kill or beat in a fight. Neo and the rebels flee and go into hiding. As seen on Netflix, most of Neo and his rebel friends escape to their ship, while one of their leaders is captured. Neo and Trinity decide to return to the Matrix and rescue him. A fight of massive proportions takes place between the rebels and the Agents. The rebels escape from the Matrix to the Nebuchadnezzar as their ship is about to be destroyed by the enemy.

The Matrix, available through Netflix, had a budget of 63 million dollars from Warner Bros. and was produced by Joel Silver. The movie was filmed in Australia to help stretch the budget, considering it's complicated special effects. Most scenes were filmed in Fox Studios in Sydney or in the city itself. The film was released in 1999 and grossed over $460 million worldwide. The Matrix won four Academy Awards as well as BFTA Awards and Saturn Awards. It was the first movie to sell over 3 million copies when released on DVD.
