Plot summary
Two years after his involvement with the Avengers, Scott Lang is under house arrest, days from the end of his sentence. FBI agent Jimmy Woo checks on him, and his daughter Cassie visits. Hank Pym and Hope van Dyne have briefly opened a tunnel to the Quantum Realm, where Hank's wife Janet has been trapped since 1987. Because Scott once shrank to subatomic levels, they believe he is entangled with Janet and that an apparent message from her has reached him. Hope and Hank take Scott from his home, leaving a large ant wearing his ankle monitor as a decoy. To finish the tunnel they need a component held by Sonny Burch, a black-market dealer.

- The comics' Ghost was male, but the film's team found casting a woman more interesting: Hannah John-Kamen got the part after director Peyton Reed received an endorsement letter from Steven Spielberg praising her work in Ready Player One.
- Michael Douglas wanted his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones cast as Janet van Dyne in a follow-up Ant-Man film, while Evangeline Lilly, who played Janet's daughter Hope, wanted Michelle Pfeiffer in the role.
- Michelle Pfeiffer was de-aged to play the young Janet van Dyne, with Hayley Lovitt as her reference double, and Lovitt had been cast as Janet in the first Ant-Man because of her "saucer-like, Michelle Pfeiffer eyes."
- The film's lab and quantum tunnel set, inspired by the television series The Time Tunnel (1966-1967), was the largest physical set built for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, which director Peyton Reed called "a little counter-intuitive".
- Early drafts of the script had Captain America cameoing in Luis' flashback recap of the airport battle in Civil War, but the writers cut it since the film already referenced Civil War so often.
- Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer filmed 1980s flashback scenes as Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne, but Peyton Reed cut them, feeling the plot should focus on the present rather than the past.
- Ant-Man and the Wasp was the first MCU film to put a female character in the title, which Peyton Reed called "organic", linking it to the Wasp's line "It's about damn time" at the end of the first film.
- For Hope van Dyne's fight scenes, Evangeline Lilly moved away from the Muay Thai and MMA style she learned for the first film, giving the Wasp fights "elegance, grace and femininity" and "a signature style" young girls could emulate.
