Plot summary
In 2017, the United States has broken into wastelands around a few civilized areas, and robotic gynoids serve as wives. Recycling executive Sam Treadwell owns a Cherry 2000, and when she short circuits on a wet kitchen floor, a repairman tells him that her memory disk survives but needs a matching body. That model is no longer produced, and the last ones sit in an abandoned warehouse in Zone 7, a lawless region ruled by the overlord Lester. Sam hires a tracker, Edith Johnson, to lead him there, and the two drive into the desert in her modified 1965 Ford Mustang. The repairman names Six-Fingered Jake, an old tracker who once mentored Edith, as the best guide around.
