Plot summary
Bernadette Fox is a well-regarded architect until a house she builds is demolished. She stops working and settles in a former schoolhouse in Seattle with her husband Elgin Branch and their daughter Bee, becoming depressed and reclusive. For good grades, Bee wants the family to travel to Antarctica, and her parents agree reluctantly. Bernadette's behavior grows erratic. Her neighbor Audrey Griffin accuses her of driving over her foot and asks her repeatedly to clear the blackberry bushes on the slope above her home.
