Plot summary
In the village of Gavaldon, best friends Sophie and Agatha hear about a legendary school from the bookshop owner. Agatha is skeptical, but Sophie, who reads fairy tales, longs to escape ordinary life and become a princess. One night, when Sophie tries to run away in secret, Agatha follows her, and a giant stymph carries both of them to the School for Good and Evil. There Agatha is dropped among the heroes, called Evers, and Sophie among the villains, the Nevers, the opposite of what each wanted. Agatha wants to return home, while Sophie insists she belongs in Good. The School Master, Rhian, says Sophie may only switch sides if she proves herself an Ever by winning true love's kiss, so she chooses Tedros, the prince of Camelot, and enlists Agatha's help.

- Laurence Fishburne joined the cast as the School Master because his daughter loved the books, which she started reading as a tween.
- Feig had long wanted to work with Kerry Washington, but their schedules never allowed it; when he read Professor Dovey's role he wanted only her, partly for her comedic skills, and she accepted because of the chance to work with Feig and Charlize Theron.
- Feig insisted on filming at Big Dog Forest in Fermanagh even though some crew members tried to persuade him against it, because the forest was unlike anything he had ever seen.
- On the first day of shooting, heavy rain created puddles of mud, and the crew ran into trouble. Roughly 350 to 500 crew members worked on the film, most of them locals.
- The team studied bird skeletons and decayed birds to learn how tissue and feathers stay on bones, and used computer-generated imagery to give the animatronic characters expressions and emotions.
