Plot summary
Reed Richards and Susan Storm are getting ready to marry, and both are weighing whether to step back from the Fantastic Four. The government asks Reed to trace a strange object that has come into the atmosphere, cutting big craters and apparently upsetting the weather and the power supply. As the phenomenon draws near New York City, it halts the wedding ceremony. Johnny Storm goes after it and finds a humanoid alien on a flying surfboard, the Silver Surfer. Johnny confronts him and is overpowered, and when Reed examines Johnny afterward, he finds that the encounter has left his molecules in passive flux, so that touching lets the teammates swap powers.

- 20th Century Fox struck a deal with the Franklin Mint to promote the movie by altering 40,000 U.S. quarters, which carried the Silver Surfer on the reverse along with a URL to the film's website, and releasing them into circulation; the U.S. Mint notified the studio that this broke the law by turning government-issued currency into private advertising.
- Director Tim Story said the script originally contained Nick Fury, but the role became that of General Hager, as having Nick Fury would have forced Fox to purchase that character's rights, and Marvel refused to license him.
- Doug Jones was chosen to physically portray the Surfer and supposedly was unaware that he was being dubbed over; this film and Hellboy remain the only two films in which he has been dubbed over in English.
- In August 2006 the actor Andre Braugher dropped out of an ER supporting role in order to be cast in Rise of the Silver Surfer.
