Plot summary
Sam Manning lands a big account at his advertising firm and calls his son Josh, a college student, to celebrate. Josh never shows, and a news report tells Sam of a shooting at Josh's college. At a memorial at the family home, Kate Lucas introduces herself to Sam as Josh's girlfriend from the year before, and media coverage of the shooting makes grieving hard. Sam drinks, and his employer tells him to take time off. Two years on, he lives on a sailboat on a lake, works as a contractor's assistant and hides his past. Emily, his ex-wife, wants his signature to sell their old house and leaves him the rest of Josh's music. Sam listens to the tapes and lyrics, learns one of the songs, and plays it at The Trill, where a young guitarist, Quentin, hears him.
