Plot summary
An experimental program offers five teenage lawbreakers a way out: they can be tried as adults for their crimes, or they can join Joe Tegra, a Native American Vietnam veteran, in the swamps. Ruben Pacheco heads the Home Boys and Moss Roosevelt heads the 27th Avenue Players, two rival gangs, and both are serving three years for assault and armed robbery. Carlos Aragon sold drugs and was caught in a police sting. James Lee MacEwen, called J.L., is the youngest and the most violent, sentenced for manslaughter and arson. Dorcey Bridger stole cars and made repeated attempts to escape from juvenile halls. Joe puts the five through survival training in the dangerous swamp, where they have to work together.
