Plot summary
A blast seals 26 miners inside a Manitoba diamond mine, and wellheads must be trucked north across the frozen lakes to reach them. Mike McCann and his brother Gurty are truckers in North Dakota; Gurty, an Iraq War veteran with PTSD and aphasia, is mocked by another driver, and Mike punches him, so both men lose their jobs. Mike learns Winnipeg is recruiting ice road drivers and applies. Jim Goldenrod takes on the rescue haul with the McCann brothers and Tantoo, a young Indigenous woman. Varnay, an actuary assessing insurance risk for Katka, the mine's owner, joins them. The four drivers are promised $200,000 between them, paid to whoever survives.
