Biography

Hugo Weaving is a stage, screen and voice actor who trained at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. His first major television part came in the 1984 series Bodyline, playing the English cricket captain Douglas Jardine. He came to international attention with Proof (1991) and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994), then reached a far wider audience as Agent Smith in the first three Matrix films (1999 to 2003) and as Elrond in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001 to 2003). Later roles include the title character of V for Vendetta (2005), The Wolfman (2010) and Red Skull in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). His voice work ranges from Babe (1995) and Happy Feet (2006) to Megatron in the Transformers films (2007 to 2011). He has won many AACTA Awards for his screen work, along with other awards for stage performances.

A role that slipped away
In the 2005 movie V for Vendetta, James Purefoy had been cast as V but lost the part six weeks into shooting because of creative differences. Hugo Weaving replaced him and filmed most of Purefoy's scenes again, despite V's face never being shown.
Big break
Hugo Weaving was cast as Megatron in Transformers after director Michael Bay personally requested him, replacing the original voice actor Frank Welker, and Weaving had never seen the film.
Beyond film
Hugo Weaving first played the Vicomte de Valmont in a stage adaptation of Les Liaisons Dangereuses in 1987, and returned to the role at the Sydney Theatre Company in 2012.
