Plot summary
In 2003, Larry "Doc" Shepherd walks into Sal Nealon's bar, and the Marine he served with in Vietnam joins him on a drive. Doc has also tracked down another old friend, Richard Mueller, now a reverend. Over dinner with Mueller and his wife, Doc explains that his own wife has died and that his only son, Larry Jr., was killed in Iraq. He asks the two men to come with him to collect the body and see it to burial. Sal agrees at once. Mueller hesitates, saying that Sal and Doc belong to a period of his life he would rather leave behind, and his wife urges him to go.
