Plot summary
At the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on June 4, 1968, California holds its Democratic presidential primary, and New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy's campaign is headquartered in the building, with a speech expected at midnight. Retired doorman John Casey plays chess with his friend Nelson. Diane is marrying her friend William so that his new marital status may send him to a base in Germany instead of Vietnam. Beautician Miriam Ebbers works in the salon while her husband Paul, the hotel manager, is having an affair with Angela, a switchboard operator. Kitchen workers under Daryl Timmons, a racist food and beverage manager, include sous chef Edward Robinson and the busboys José and Miguel. Campaign volunteers Jimmy and Cooper are sidetracked by an acid trip, and Czechoslovak reporter Lenka Janáčková seeks an interview.

- Stuck with writer's block, Emilio Estevez checked into a motel in Pismo Beach, where the woman working at the front desk turned out to have been in the Ambassador Hotel the evening Kennedy was shot, and had later married two young men to help them avoid the draft; he used her experience to mould the character of Diane.
- The busboy Jose stands in for Juan Romero, the young man photographed cradling Kennedy's body immediately after he was shot. In the film he has tickets for the Dodgers game where Don Drysdale is expected to set a record of six consecutive shutouts, but a double shift makes him miss it; Drysdale did take that record on June 4, 1968.
