Plot summary
The Old Guard, based at Fort Myer, Virginia, furnishes the honor guard at Arlington National Cemetery and keeps watch at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Among its ranks is Clell Hazard, who fought in Korea and Vietnam and would rather be training men for the war. He finds the ceremonial duty pointless. His friend Sergeant Major "Goody" Nelson serves with him, and his girlfriend Samantha Davis writes for The Washington Post and opposes the war. When Jackie Willow, the son of an old comrade, joins his platoon, Hazard sees a chance to prepare one soldier for what awaits him in Vietnam. Willow treats the fighting as a soldier's duty, and Rachel Feld, a colonel's daughter, will not marry him as long as he serves.
