Biography
Robert Duvall was an American actor and filmmaker whose career on stage and screen lasted seven decades. Born in San Diego in 1931, he began acting professionally in 1952 at the Gateway Playhouse on Long Island and moved into television during the 1960s. He made his Broadway debut in Wait Until Dark in 1966 and won an Obie Award for playing Eddie Carbone in Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge. His film debut was Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962); later came The Godfather (1972) and Apocalypse Now (1979), which brought him a BAFTA Award and a Golden Globe. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Tender Mercies (1983) and was nominated again for The Great Santini (1979), The Apostle (1997), A Civil Action (1998) and The Judge (2014). He also won two Primetime Emmys, including for the miniseries Broken Trail, and the critic Vincent Canby called him the American Olivier.

For Tender Mercies, Duvall insisted his contract state that he sing the songs himself, saying there was no point if they were just going to dub somebody else.
Behind the camera
Duvall founded the production company Butcher's Run Films in 1992, and later wrote, directed and starred in The Apostle, which brought him an Academy Award nomination.
Getting ready for a role
Duvall played Captain Augustus "Gus" McCrae, a retired Texas Ranger, in the 1989 miniseries Lonesome Dove. For that part, the Texas marksman Joe Bowman taught him how to use Walker revolvers.
A first
In 2014 Duvall starred in The Judge with Robert Downey Jr. His supporting performance was praised and brought nominations for a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Academy Award. In 2015, at 84, he became the oldest actor ever nominated for Best Supporting Actor, a record Christopher Plummer has since surpassed.
First role
Duvall began acting professionally at the Gateway Playhouse, an Equity summer theater in Bellport, Long Island, New York. During its 1952 season he made his stage debut as the Pilot in Laughter in the Stars, adapted from The Little Prince.
