Plot summary
In 1932, Eunice Evers works as a nurse in Tuskegee, Alabama, where two doctors, Sam Brodus and Douglas, enlist her for a government-funded program. She travels the town telling residents that care is free. Three men she meets, Willie Johnson, Hodman Bryan and Ben Washington, agree to be treated. The program enrolls 412 men who have syphilis and promises them medical help for what is called bad blood. In truth it is a study of the disease in men who receive no real medicine; what they are given is mercury and placebos. Eunice suggests the term bad blood so the men will not learn what they carry, and she remains close to them, since many are her friends.
