Plot summary
Earth's climate modification towers, built to counter global warming, instead triggered a new ice age. By 2045, survivors live in underground colonies, struggling with illness and food shortages. Colony 7 is led by two soldiers, Briggs and Mason. A distress signal from Colony 5 sends Briggs, Sam and Graydon out across the snow; before leaving, Briggs puts Sam's lover Kai in charge of the bunker, which angers Mason. Inside Colony 5 they find blood everywhere and a locked door that Sam picks open. Leland shows them a transmission from a group that repaired a weather machine and melted the snow, offering aid to anyone who brings seeds to plant. Leland says an expedition failed to reach the signal's source, and its tracks brought a band of cannibals down on the colony.
