Plot summary
Sergeant Jake Roenick has been drinking and taking painkillers since a sting went wrong and two undercover officers died. He now runs a desk at Precinct 13 in Detroit, which is being shut down, and psychiatrist Alexandra Sabian has arrived to judge whether he is fit for duty. On New Year's Eve the station holds only a skeleton crew: Roenick, retiring officer Jasper O'Shea and secretary Iris Ferry. A snowstorm forces a prison transport to unload its prisoners there, among them crime boss Marion Bishop, Beck, Anna and Smiley. Then masked gunmen cut the power and communications and attack the building, calling for Bishop to be handed over. Roenick unlocks the cells and gives the prisoners weapons to help hold the building.
