Biography

Pierce Brosnan is an Irish actor who came to worldwide fame as James Bond in four films released between 1995 and 2002, from GoldenEye through Die Another Day. Born in Drogheda, he left school at 16, studied commercial illustration, and spent three years training at the Drama Centre London. Stage work led to the title role in Remington Steele, which made him a television star from 1982 to 1987. He earned Golden Globe nominations for Nancy Astor and for The Matador. His break on the big screen came with The Lawnmower Man, followed by Mrs. Doubtfire, and after Bond he led the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair and Dante's Peak. He also appeared in Mamma Mia! and its sequel, and took roles in The Ghost Writer and Black Adam. In 2025 he played Ron in The Thursday Murder Club.

Did you know?!

  1. A role that slipped away

In 1986, NBC canceled Remington Steele. When Brosnan got the offer to play James Bond, the publicity lifted the show's ratings and it was renewed, so his contract forced him back. Eon Productions then cast Timothy Dalton.

  2. Early training

Brosnan trained as an actor for three years at the Drama Centre London after leaving school at 16 and first studying commercial illustration at Saint Martin's School of Art.

  3. First role

Brosnan made his acting debut in Wait Until Dark at the York Theatre Royal, where he worked as an acting assistant stage manager after graduating from drama school in 1975.

  4. Big break

Within six months, Tennessee Williams picked Brosnan to play McCabe in the British premiere of The Red Devil Battery Sign. Williams sent him a telegram that said only "Thank God for you, my dear boy".

  5. Behind the camera

In 1996, Brosnan started the film production company Irish DreamTime with producing partner Beau St. Clair. The company's second studio project, The Thomas Crown Affair, came out a year after its first and met critical and box office success.

  6. A role that slipped away

Brosnan was set to star in a film adaptation of Hemingway's Across the River and into the Trees with director Martin Campbell, but both dropped out and Liev Schreiber took the lead role.
