  1. A first

Dench was cast as M in GoldenEye in 1995, becoming the first woman to portray James Bond's boss and succeeding Robert Brown in the role.

  2. Getting ready for a role

In 1968 Dench was offered the part of Sally Bowles in the musical Cabaret. She had never done a musical, and her fear of singing before an audience was such that she tried out from the wings, so the pianists were left by themselves on stage.

  3. First role

In September 1957, Dench gave her first professional stage performance with the Old Vic Company at the Royal Court Theatre in Liverpool, where she played Ophelia in Hamlet.

  4. Behind the camera

Dench directed for the first time in 1988, during the Renaissance Theatre Company's touring season. Her Much Ado About Nothing, placed in the Napoleonic era, had Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson as Benedick and Beatrice.

  5. Behind the award

In 2016, Dench won Best Actress in a Supporting Role at the Olivier Awards for playing Paulina in The Winter's Tale. That eighth win as a performer broke her own record.
