Plot summary
Tyler Hawkins audits classes and works at a bookstore, keeping his distance from Charles, his workaholic businessman father, after the suicide of his older brother Michael. Caroline, Tyler's younger sister and an artist, also wants their father's attention. One night Tyler and his roommate Aidan Hall are caught up in someone else's street fight and arrested by Neil Craig, an NYPD detective. Aidan sees Neil drop Ally off and learns she attends the same school as Tyler, so he urges him to ask her out. Tyler and Ally start spending time together. Both of them are grieving: Tyler for Michael, Ally for her mother Helen, killed on a subway platform while she watched.
