Plot summary
General Konstantin Benin, a dissident Russian officer left behind by the collapse of the Soviet Union, wants to restore his country's standing as a superpower. With the help of the German nuclear physicist Dr. Karl Leitzig, he has a bomb loaded onto a hijacked goods train in Bremen, crewed by mercenaries under Alex Tierney and pointed toward Iraq. Russia would have to move into Iraq to take the bomb back, and the operation would pull its armed forces together again. Malcolm Philpott, who heads the United Nations Anti-Crime Organization, sends a multinational team, with field operative Mike Graham and information analyst Sabrina Carver working in a reluctant partnership.

- While Death Train was being made during the Yugoslav Wars, Pierce Brosnan said the hotel the cast stayed in was overrun by soldiers, that their combat outfits looked like the Croatian Army's, and that going to work sometimes felt like going to the front.
- In 1991 a Warwickshire council trading standards department sued the publisher of the novels behind Death Train for misleading advertising, partly because Alistair MacLean's name appeared in bigger type on the cover than Alastair MacNeill's; the publisher was fined £6,250, and a later MacNeill novel had its cover amended so the two names were the same size.
- Death Train was the first project Pierce Brosnan made after the death of his wife; he called it boy's own adventure and said it was everything he wanted to do, running along the tops of trains, shooting guns and climbing in and out of helicopters.
