Plot summary
Kate Abbott works at the American embassy in London, reviewing visa applications and applying stricter screening to anyone suspected of terrorist ties. Her colleagues gather at a restaurant to celebrate Bill Talbot's birthday, and Kate slips out to buy him a gift, so she survives the bomb that tears through the room and kills most of the team. Bill had gone back to his desk, where he has been deleting records of visas he approved. Investigators find chromium traces, the mark of a killer known as the Watchmaker, and witnesses and footage make Kate the prime suspect. With agents hunting her, she goes into hiding.
