Plot summary
Henry Broadway is at a Montana prison when his father, Isaac, is hanged, still insisting he is innocent and that Saul Butler, the sheriff of the town of Trinity, framed him. Estranged from his father, Henry believes him and sets out for Trinity. There the present sheriff, Gabriel Dove, tells him Butler is already dead, and that the town remembers Isaac as a villain and Butler as a hero, so challenging Butler's name will only bring trouble. The townsfolk hold that a Blackfoot woman, Running Cub, killed Butler, and a local named Gideon wants her whereabouts investigated. Gabriel pays for Henry's room at the saloon.
