Plot summary
Neil Randall is an advertising executive in Chicago who expects a promotion and lives with his wife Abby and their young daughter Sophie. When Neil's boss, Karl Granger, invites the couple to his country cottage for the weekend, Abby arranges a nanny so she can visit her sister, Diane. On the drive to meet Diane, a man who had been hiding in the backseat appears with a gun. He is Tom Ryan and says he has kidnapped Sophie. For the next twenty-four hours, he tells them, they will follow his orders, or their daughter will die. Ryan presents himself as a sociopath with nothing to lose, and his aim is not their money but the destruction of Neil's life piece by piece.
