Joyce Bonner, a high school cheerleader, disappears, and Detective Malloy takes the case. His attention settles on Evan Birch, a professor of philosophy at a college whose lectures are popular and whose charm is well known around campus. Evan is married to Ellen, and word of his earlier affairs off campus has already reached her, so she questions the account he gives of where he was. Evan faces questions from Malloy, and small inconsistencies in his statements keep the detective's scrutiny on him. Evidence gathered in the investigation makes Evan the leading suspect in the case.
