Plot summary
In 1868, Gideon is camped in the Ruby Mountains when gunshots ring out and a bullet catches him in the left arm. He takes what he can carry and races down the mountain, with Colonel Morsman Carver, a former Confederate officer, and the hired men Pope, Hayes, Parsons and the Kid in pursuit. Hidden from the posse, Gideon digs the bullet out with a Bowie knife, leaves a fire burning to draw them in, and moves on. He buys a horse from a ranch family after a young woman named Charlotte dresses his wound and her family lets him sleep in their cabin. Carver's men interrogate the family afterward. The pursuit moves from snowbound mountains into dry desert country.

- Richard Gere was set to star alongside Liam Neeson when the film was announced at the Cannes Film Festival; he dropped out in August 2005 and Pierce Brosnan replaced him.
