Plot summary
In 1986, James Bond and his fellow MI6 agent Alec Trevelyan raid a secret chemical weapons plant in the Soviet Union at Arkhangelsk. Trevelyan is captured by Colonel Arkady Grigorovich Ourumov, and Bond blows up the site and flies out in a stolen plane. Nine years later, Bond cannot stop Xenia Onatopp from stealing an attack helicopter at a military demonstration in Monte Carlo. A radar station at Severnaya in Siberia is then hit by an electromagnetic pulse from an old Soviet satellite weapon called GoldenEye. M, the new head of MI6, sends Bond to look into it. In Saint Petersburg he meets the CIA officer Jack Wade, who points him to the ex-KGB gangster Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky, a man who can arrange a meeting with the syndicate behind the attack, Janus.

- Pierce Brosnan almost played James Bond nine years earlier: he was set to replace Roger Moore in 1986 but was blocked by his contract to star in the TV series Remington Steele, so the role went to Timothy Dalton instead.
- Before Brosnan was approached, Mel Gibson, Hugh Grant and Liam Neeson all turned Bond down. Neeson said his then fiancee Natasha Richardson told him she would not marry him if he took the role.
- The villain Alec Trevelyan was originally written as an older mentor figure to Bond, and Anthony Hopkins and Alan Rickman were both sought for the part before turning it down, leading the producers to cast Sean Bean and rewrite the character as Bond's peer.
- Pierce Brosnan injured his hand while filming the extending ladder stunt himself during the antenna-tower fight with Sean Bean's Trevelyan, forcing producers to delay his remaining scenes and shoot the Severnaya sequences earlier than planned.
- Judi Dench's casting as M made her the first woman to play the head of MI6 in the series, a choice widely believed to have been inspired by Stella Rimington, who had become the real head of MI5 in 1992.
- Stuntman Wayne Michaels performed the film's opening 220-meter bungee jump off the Contra Dam in Switzerland, which a 2002 Sky Movies poll voted the best movie stunt of all time and which set a record for the highest bungee jump off a fixed structure.
- Swedish pop group Ace of Base wrote a proposed theme song for the film, but their label Arista Records pulled them from the project fearing the negative fallout if the film flopped, and the song was reworked into their single "The Juvenile" instead.
