Plot summary

Sir Lionel, who rides with the Round Table, dies defending King Arthur from the renegade Sir Ruber, and at the funeral Arthur tells Lionel's widow Lady Juliana and her daughter Kayley that Camelot will always welcome them. Kayley trains on the farm, hoping to become a knight as her father was, though her mother fears for her. Ten years on, Ruber's griffin flies into Camelot and carries off Excalibur, Arthur's sword, and drops it somewhere in the Forbidden Forest. Ruber takes Kayley and Juliana prisoner to use their access to the king, and Kayley slips away into the woods with his steel men after her. A blind hermit, Garrett, and Merlin's falcon Ayden come to her aid. Garrett intends to find the sword, and Kayley persuades him to take her along.

Effects supervisor Michel Gagné recalled that people were giving up on the film: the head of layout was kicked out, then the head of background, the executive producer, the producer, the director and the associate producer - all the heads rolled, leaving a hard environment to work in.
Screenwriter DeMicco had sold his spec script A Day in November to Warner Bros. for $1 million. Animator Lauren Faust said the film was initially envisioned with a PG-13 rating, meant to draw homage to Ralph Bakshi's Wizards (1977), then made family-friendly to compete with the Disney Renaissance.
Quest for Camelot grossed $6 million on its opening weekend, ranking third behind The Horse Whisperer and Deep Impact, then $22.5 million in North America and $38.1 million worldwide. The studio lost about $40 million on the film.
John Gielgud voiced Merlin, the wizard and Arthur's advisor, in Quest for Camelot, and it turned out to be the last film of Gielgud's career.
"The Prayer" won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and was nominated for the Academy Award, losing to "When You Believe". On the soundtrack Celine Dion sang it in English and Andrea Bocelli in Italian; their better-known duet only appeared later, in October 1998.
A Nintendo 64 version of the game was planned, but it was scrapped because of the film's performance at the box office.
