Plot summary
At her sister Claire's third wedding, to a man Rose once had a crush on, Rose Morgan tells her friend Doris that she is certain she will never marry, though she imagines being truly known by someone would be wonderful. Rose teaches English literature at Columbia and lives with her mother, Hannah. Gregory Larkin, a math professor there, is unable to connect with his students, and when his ex-girlfriend Candace arrives at a talk about his new book, he has a panic attack. His personal ad seeks a woman over thirty-five with a doctorate; appearance does not matter. Claire replies on Rose's behalf. Gregory visits one of Rose's classes, takes her to dinner, and they date for three months without physical intimacy, until he proposes a marriage built on shared interests and mutual affection.

- The shoot was troubled, with filming delays and more than a dozen cast or crew members fired or quitting; actor Dudley Moore was fired in early November for failing to remember his lines, later found to be an early sign of the progressive brain disorder that eventually killed him, and he was replaced by George Segal.
- Barbra Streisand initially asked other directors to direct the film, including Robert Zemeckis and Herbert Ross, but they all turned it down, possibly because Streisand had a reputation for being difficult to work with; she ultimately decided to direct it herself.
- Lauren Bacall's performance won her the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role, plus a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, the first in her then-50-plus-year career.
- The soundtrack includes "The Apology / Nessun Dorma" by Luciano Pavarotti with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zubin Mehta, but in the final scene Pavarotti's voice was mimed by the real-life tenor and actor Carlo Scibelli.
