Plot summary
Percy Jackson is sixteen and has dyslexia and ADHD. On a school trip, a Fury disguised as his substitute English teacher attacks him and demands the bolt. His best friend Grover Underwood and his Latin teacher Mr. Brunner drive her off. Mr. Brunner hands Percy a pen that is in fact a weapon and orders Grover to escort Percy and Sally, Percy's mother, to Camp Half-Blood, a secret refuge for demigod children. On the road a Minotaur carries Sally away. At the camp Percy learns he is a son of Poseidon, that Grover is a satyr sworn to protect him, and that Mr. Brunner is really the centaur Chiron. An apparition of Hades says Sally is held in the Underworld in exchange for the missing bolt, and Percy sets out to save her.
