Plot summary
Sodor Day, the island's yearly celebration, is approaching, and Thomas and James report to the wharf for duties from Mr. Percival. Thomas is assigned to gather timber alongside Duncan, a narrow-gauge engine who taunts him over his poor knowledge of the hills. Duncan guides him onto a path that crosses an old bridge, and the bridge breaks apart beneath him. Thomas retreats and takes another route, coming upon an overgrown abandoned town. News of the town travels across the island to Sir Topham Hatt, who recognizes it as Great Waterton. He orders the town restored and puts Thomas in charge of the work, handing Thomas' regular duties to a new tank engine named Stanley. The other engines take to Stanley, and Thomas watches with growing jealousy.

- HIT Entertainment announced in July 2007 that Pierce Brosnan would be the new narrator of Thomas & Friends, voicing both the British and American versions starting with the hour-long special The Great Discovery and replacing Michael Angelis and Michael Brandon. Brosnan said he was excited to narrate a series he had watched with his children.
- The Great Discovery was the final Thomas & Friends production made with models. The twelfth series that followed mixed CGI with the models before the franchise switched to full CGI with Hero of the Rails.
