Biography

Desmond Llewelyn was a Welsh actor whose defining role was Q, the MI6 quartermaster, in the James Bond series. He first played Q in From Russia with Love and went on to appear in seventeen Eon-produced Bond films, through to The World Is Not Enough (1999), opposite all five of the era's Bond actors. Before Bond, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, made his feature debut in Ask a Policeman, and acted in the theater with Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh, later appearing in Olivier's Hamlet. His other films included Knights of the Round Table (1953), Sword of Sherwood Forest (1960) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), and he was a regular on the television series Follyfoot from 1971 to 1973. He became one of the most familiar character actors in British cinema.

  1. A first

    Llewelyn portrayed Q in seventeen films, a tally of Bond appearances no other actor has matched. His scenes paired him with the first five men to play Bond: Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan.

  2. Big break

    Terence Young asked Llewelyn to read for Major Boothroyd in From Russia with Love, and although Young and Ian Fleming wanted Q to speak with a strong Welsh accent, Llewelyn argued for an upper-class English accent and won.

  3. A role that slipped away

    Llewelyn was written out of three episodes of Follyfoot so he could film Live and Let Die, but the Bond producers left his character out of the film anyway.

  4. Early training

    While at Radley College, Llewelyn took part in theatrical productions. He started as a stagehand, and fellow pupil Dennis Price urged him to take on more acting roles.

  5. Getting ready for a role

    In 1950, Llewelyn played a supporting part as a Welsh tank commander, '77 Jones, in Terence Young's film They Were Not Divided, using his Welsh background and war experience.
