Plot summary
Richard Haig is a literature professor at Cambridge who has followed the example of his philandering father, Gordon, dating a series of younger women. Kate, a 25-year-old American student, is one of them. At a hotel bar where he plans to meet Kate's father, Richard flirts with a woman, Kate's half sister Olivia. The father never arrives, so Richard sits down with the two women and hears about their own father, a secret polygamist. The two half sisters had first met on a beach where their father kept both of his families at once. The sisters become friends and agree to be honest with each other. Kate then tells Richard she is pregnant and gives him time to decide whether to move to Los Angeles.
