Plot summary
Robinson Crusoe, a Scottish gentleman who has served in the Royal Navy and the army, kills his friend Patrick in a duel over Mary. Patrick's brothers come after him, and Crusoe sails with the merchant marine while Mary tries to settle the quarrel. A typhoon wrecks his ship near New Guinea. He buries the crewmates who wash ashore, then takes tools, supplies and weapons from the vessel stranded on the reef and frees the captain's corgi, Skipper. He builds a shelter inland and grows food, watching for a European ship; one passes before he can signal it. Drums and voices lead him to a tribe sacrificing prisoners, and when he fires his weapon the third prisoner escapes.
