Plot summary
Jean Charles Pommier, a French anthropologist who has spent years studying the beliefs and rituals of nomadic peoples, settles in Los Angeles with his wife, Niki, to teach at UCLA. One night a gang of street punks who travel in a black van vandalizes their suburban house, and Pommier finds a shrine in the garage honoring the murderer of two girls who had lived in the house. He begins following the punks and photographing them, drawn to a nomadic subculture that resembles the ones he studied abroad. In a Los Angeles hospital, Dr. Eileen Flax receives his memories, and through them she returns to the places he went in his last days.
