Plot summary
Charles Dickens is a celebrated storyteller whose work keeps him distant from his family, especially Walter, his youngest son, a five-year-old dreamer who rarely leaves the side of Willa, the family cat. During a reading at a London theater, Walter's mischief disrupts the performance. Instead of punishing the boy, Dickens's wife Catherine suggests he tell their son about a king greater than Arthur, whom Walter admires: Jesus Christ. Dickens agrees to tell the tale for his family alone. By the fire, he begins with the birth of Christ, and Walter's imagination carries him into the stable, the angel's visit, and the arrival of the wise men and the shepherds. Walter also sees King Herod's hunt for the newborn King and the flight that takes Mary and Joseph into hiding.
