Plot summary
Desmond Doyle lives in Dublin with his children, Evelyn, Dermot and Maurice. His wife abandons the family on the day after Christmas, and he is out of work. With no woman in the house to care for the children, Desmond's mother-in-law reports the situation to the authorities, and the Irish courts place the children in orphanages run by the Church. A sympathetic judge tells Desmond he will get his children back once he has a job. Bernadette, who works behind the bar where he sings, tells him her brother Michael is a solicitor.

- Survivors of Ireland's industrial schools criticized the film's closing credits, which claimed that the changes in Irish law won by the Doyle case led to children being reunited with their families.
- The orphanage and school scenes were filmed at Rathcoran House, a disused convent school in Baltinglass, rather than a purpose-built set.
