Plot summary
In 1949, Harry Allen is a middle-aged executive, and he and his wife Pat are the picture of a happy couple. Harry has fallen in love with Kay Nesbitt, a much younger war widow, and he confides in Richard Langley, his closest friend. He wants to marry Kay, but he believes that asking Pat for a divorce would humiliate her and break her heart. He even asks Richard to call on Kay so that she will not be lonely. Convinced that he cannot simply leave his wife, Harry settles on another solution: he mixes poison into the digestive aid Pat takes each night, meaning to spare her the shame of a separation by ending her life instead.

SPOILER
The DVD release of Married Life includes three alternative endings, all set in late 1966, in which Harry sees a billboard for the digestive aid he had laced with poison to kill his wife; in the first and longest, he crashes the car and Pat is killed.- The novel Five Roundabouts to Heaven by John Bingham, which was the basis for Married Life, also served as the basis for the December 20, 1962 episode of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour called "The Tender Poisoner".
