Plot summary
Max Burdett and Lola Cirillo are master thieves who take a Napoleon diamond from a convoy guarded by FBI agent Stan Lloyd, then retire to Paradise Island in the Bahamas. Six months later Lloyd arrives, convinced the pair are there for the third diamond, which sits aboard a cruise ship docking at the island for a week. Max denies it and shows Lloyd the island's pleasures, even putting him up in the bridge suite. Lloyd teams with Sophie, a local constable, to catch Max in the act. Henri Mooré, a wealthy tycoon, learns of Max's record and offers him island benefits in exchange for taking the diamond himself.

- Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan were both offered film cameos as police officers, a nod to the Rush Hour series which Brett Ratner also directed, but both of them turned the parts down.
- Brett Ratner joined the film as its director after John Stockwell, who had originally been scheduled to direct it, dropped out over creative differences.
- Don Cheadle's casting marked a third collaboration with Ratner, following The Family Man in 2000 and Rush Hour 2 in 2001.
