Plot summary
Carl Vandermeer, a former Deadhead turned evangelical, attends the Church of the Third Millennium with his wife Gwen and his stepdaughter Angie. The pastor, Dan Day, is expanding the congregation into a Christian community he calls City on a Hill. At a debate between Dan and Professor Blaylock, an outspoken atheist, the two bestselling authors consider writing a book about their opposing views, and Dan invites Carl along to the professor's office that night. There Dan picks up an antique pistol, and it goes off. He hides what happened and drives Carl home in silence. The pastor's devoted followers will protect him at any cost.
