John Hurt
Biography
John Hurt was an English actor whose career spanned more than five decades. Born in Chesterfield, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and came to prominence as Richard Rich in A Man for All Seasons (1966). He won a BAFTA for The Naked Civil Servant (1975) and played Caligula in I, Claudius. He was nominated for Academy Awards for Midnight Express (1978) and The Elephant Man (1980). His films included Alien (1979), Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984), The Field (1990), and Rob Roy (1995). Later he played Mr Ollivander in the Harry Potter films and appeared in V for Vendetta (2005), Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), and Snowpiercer (2013). He acted in Melancholia (2011), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), and Jackie (2016), voiced roles in Watership Down (1978) and The Lord of the Rings (1978), and played the War Doctor in Doctor Who. He received four BAFTAs, a Golden Globe, and a knighthood.

A role that slipped away
John Hurt initially turned down the role of Caligula in I, Claudius, but director Herbert Wise invited him to a pre-production party, where meeting the cast and crew changed his mind and he took the part.
Early training
John Hurt won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1960, trained there for two years, and graduated in 1962 with an Acting (RADA Diploma).
Beyond film
In June 2009, Hurt played Big Brother on screen for the Paper Zoo Theatre Company's stage version of Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. That production opened at the National Media Museum in Bradford and went on tour in 2010.
