Biography

Robbie Coltrane, born Anthony Robin McMillan, was a Scottish performer who worked as an actor, comedian and author. Born in Rutherglen, he moved into acting in his early twenties, working in theater and comedy and taking his stage name in tribute to the jazz saxophonist John Coltrane. Early stage work included John Byrne's The Slab Boys in Edinburgh, and he appeared in the sketch shows Alfresco and The Comic Strip Presents, later directing and co-writing an episode of the latter. His first British Academy Television Award nomination came for the BBC miniseries Tutti Frutti, and he won the BAFTA for Best Actor three years running from 1994 as the criminal psychologist Fitz in Cracker. He played the Russian gangster Valentin Zukovsky in the Bond films GoldenEye (1995) and The World Is Not Enough (1999), then found worldwide fame as Rubeus Hagrid across the Harry Potter series (2001 to 2011). He was appointed an OBE in 2006.
