Plot summary
Buchanan is the scientist behind an energy beam meant to end all war without harming the environment, a weapon that erases whatever it is aimed at. The prototype behaves unpredictably, disrupting weather worldwide and tearing rifts in space and time that make people vanish. A rift catches Buchanan on the drive home from the testing facility, and he arrives with his computer-controlled car in Switzerland in 1817. There he meets Victor Frankenstein, whose young brother has been killed; a trial will decide whether the boy's nanny is guilty. Villagers report a monster in the woods. Watching the proceedings, Buchanan notices a young woman taking notes, Mary Shelley.
