Plot summary
Bobby Platt, an emotionally challenged young man, lives with his abusive stepfather, Bernard De Winter, known as The Fat, who killed Bobby's pet mouse and screamed at Bobby's mother until she died. Bobby runs away from home and ends up in woodlands near Cornwall in England. A car accident brings him into the company of an old man who introduces himself as Mr. Summers. Mr. Summers spends his days on the road, stopping to bury animals struck by cars, a duty he calls The Work. Bobby feels the same pull toward animals and joins him, and the two travel the countryside together.
