Plot summary
Two men seize Maureen Winston in Paris, and her family waits for word of her. Her father blames her sister Margaret, who had encouraged the trip. Their grandfather, Pop Winston, has another idea: send for Jake Speed, the hero of a series of men's adventure paperbacks. Margaret goes to meet him and learns that Jake is real, and that he works with a sidekick, Desmond Floyd. The books, she is told, are drawn from their actual exploits. Jake says the kidnappers are white slavers, and that Maureen is held in an African country in the middle of a civil war. Margaret travels there with the two men to bring her sister home.
