Plot summary
In 1964, Mods and Rockers fight on the beaches of Brighton. Pinkie Brown is the enforcer of Spicer's protection racket, and the town is also claimed by the rival mobster Colleoni. Rose Wilson, a young waitress, appears in a photograph taken on the pier beside one of Colleoni's men. Pinkie feigns courtship of her, and Rose falls in love with him. Ida, who employs Rose and was a friend of the man in the photograph, suspects Pinkie and wants to keep the girl out of his hands.

- Rowan Joffé wanted nothing to do with the job while it was pitched as a remake of the 1948 film. Re-reading Graham Greene's novel changed his mind, he fell in love with the character of Rose, and he talked the studio into letting him adapt the book directly.
- The novel and the Boulting brothers' 1948 version are both set in the 1930s; this adaptation moves Pinkie's Brighton forward thirty years into the Mods and Rockers era of the 1960s.
