Plot summary
In 1940s Kenya, British expatriates in the Happy Valley region fill the war years with drink, drugs, parties and extramarital affairs. Diana Delves Broughton, the young wife of Sir John Henry Delves Broughton, known as Jock, lives by the couple's pre-nuptial understanding: if either falls in love with someone else, the other will not stand in the way. Diana falls for Josslyn Hay, the Earl of Erroll, a philanderer whose other lovers include the American heiress Alice de Janze. Jock honors the agreement in public, toasting the pair at a Nairobi club. Erroll is later found shot in his car, and Jock is charged with the murder.
