Plot summary
Martin arrives at Oxford determined to have the professor Arthur Seldom supervise his thesis, and takes a room in the house of Seldom's friend Mrs. Eagleton, where her daughter Beth cares for her mother and resents it. At a public lecture Seldom denies that absolute truth exists, and when Martin answers that he believes in the number pi, Seldom ridicules him in front of the audience. Ready to give up his studies, Martin returns home and meets Seldom at the door; inside they find Mrs. Eagleton dead. Seldom tells the police the address had come to him on a note marked as the first of a series, and argues that a killer is posing him a puzzle. Martin suggests the victims are chosen because they are already dying.
