Plot summary
Sissy Hankshaw regards her oversized thumbs, the result of a mutation, as an asset rather than a defect, and they carry her across the country as a hitchhiker. She ends up in New York, where she takes work as a model for The Countess, a mogul who sells feminine hygiene products and becomes her agent. Years later he brings her to the Rubber Rose Ranch, the beauty ranch he owns in California, to shoot a commercial against a backdrop of mating whooping cranes nesting along the lake. Bonanza Jellybean, one of the cowgirls who work at the ranch, becomes Sissy's friend.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Some viewers claim River Phoenix is visible in a brief cameo near the end of the film, but director Gus Van Sant, co-star Udo Kier and Phoenix's assistant at the time, Sue Solgot, all say he was not in it. Van Sant: "River wasn't even in the desert when we shot. That is Jim Baldwin in the beekeeper's hat."
- Van Sant delayed the release after being dissatisfied with the cut screened at the 1993 Toronto International Film Festival. He trimmed the New York scenes and Keanu Reeves's storyline in favour of the ranch and the relationship between Sissy and Bonanza Jellybean, and cut a whole subplot about the Clock People.
- The picture opened in wide release on May 20, 1994, and grossed a mere $1,708,873 against an estimated $8.5 million budget.
- Uma Thurman was nominated for the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress for the film, losing to Sharon Stone, who took the prize for Intersection and The Specialist.
